What does RX stand for (if anything)

Just a bit of curosity. What does the RX in RX-8 and Rx-7 stand for? I'd imagine that the R stands for rotary, but don't know for sure. It might not mean anything as far as I know, just wondering. Anyone here know?

Originally it meant Rotary Experimental. Then, it was just Rotary engine cars, and piston engine cars were MX - MX-3, MX-5, MX-6. Not sure why M, probably a Japanese word for piston.

Thanks truemagellen. I did a search for rotary, experiment and myth. I got this thread, and the one you are probably talking about. Maybe someone can chime in, but after reading this I can't say that i'm sold on Rotary Experiment OR Rotary Export. I lean more towards experiment, as I believe they do call the RX-'s by that name in Japan as well.

the RX name first showed up in the RX-500 showcar in the '60s, thus orginially it should've meant rotary experimental. marketing picked it up from there and all export rotarys were called RX's until RX-7, when jdm RX-7's were named the Savannah RX-7

It's rotary export. Just search on those two words and you should find plenty of previous disucssions about the topic.

btw, truemagellen, I'm in NJ right now and have been busy with other stuff, thus my absence on the boards.

After seeing some of the attempts in the Multimedia section, I think RX may stand for:

Ricer eXperiments

as has been said previously, 20 years later and hundreds of thousands of cars made, it isn't an experiment. you don't produce a car when it's an expiriment.

r = rotary, m = mazda. just a grouping of letters. like the sportbikes, R1, R6, gsx-r, zx-10.
